Toilet Cleaner Than Drinking Fountain?

June 12th, 2007

A middle school student tested his school water fountains and toilets to find out which was cleaner, his experiment found that the toilet water was actually cleaner than the drinking fountain! In a study he created to reverse a school-wide ban on bottled water, Kyleray Katherman devised a simple study using q-tips wiped around the bowl of a school toilet and the nozzle of drinking fountains. The experiment showed that there was more bacteria on the water fountain nozzle than in the toilet bowl, probably because the toilets were disinfected on a daily basis. This shouldn’t scare you away from drinking fountains, as most bacteria is harmless to people and this particular schools drinking fountains could be old and poorly maintained. No students reported illness from drinking from the fountain. The school had placed a ban on bottled water due to some students bringing alcohol in the bottles. Bottled water is also not environmentally friendly, with thousands of tons of waste being  generated from discarded water bottles. There are very few instances of tap water being contaminated with any dangerous bacteria in North America and people should not be afraid to drink from taps or water fountains unless their is notification that tap or well water is unsafe in their area.

New Genes Linked to Common Diseases

June 7th, 2007

Scientists working on the largest ever study of genes and disease have found ten new genes linked to common conditions. Scientists from 50 research groups examined 500,000 genetic markers from 17,000 people to learn more about genetics. This new information will greatly help doctors and scientists understand common afflictions like diabetes, as well as other problems. Continuing study of this type of information will hopefully lead to treatments and cures for some medical problems in the next decade.

10 Minutes of Exercise Can Help Your Heart!

Germs In Space!

May 10th, 2007

Scientists are convinced that some bacteria is alive and well and living on the Voyager 1 Rocket, is currently traveling away from our solar system. The rocket, launched in 1977, is a deep space exploration craft. The bacteria, likely placed on the rocket booster engines by the hands and breath of the people who built the craft, is probably in a dormant, hibernation stage. In recent years scientists have discovered that some types of bacteria, collectively called ‘Extremophiles’, are able to live in very hostile environments. The parts of the rocket, designed to seperate from the main craft, should float harmelsly in space. Modern space researchers make sure that anything they send into space now is sterile and free of bacteria, not because it could do any harm to us, but becuase if foriegn bacteria were to make it’s way to another planet it could contaminate any possible bacteriological life that exists on that planet. With what science has discovered in the last decade, it is not thought that Mars may have its own native bacteria, and scientists hope to study this bacteria without it being contaminated by earth craft.
